   यह उन दिनों की बात है जब मेरे नाना 17 18 वर्ष के होंगे।मेरे नाना अपने पूरे परिवार के साथ रत्नागिरी के एक छोटे से गांव में, अपनी मासी की बेटे की शादी में शामिल होने गए थे। गांव पहुंचते ही मेरे नाना अपने बचपन के दोस्तों और अपने करीबी रिश्तेदारों से मिलकर काफी खुश हो गए। दूसरे शाम ही मेरे नाना की मासी के बेटे की सगाई थी।

       मेरे नाना और उनके गांव के दोस्त तैयार होकर सगाई में चले गए। उन लोगों ने सगाई में बहुत मौज मस्ती की। मेरे नाना और उनके दोस्त खाना खाने के बाद सगाई के मंडप से थोड़ी दूरी पर टहलने चले गए। सारे दोस्त रास्ते में काफी मजे कर रहे थे। अचानक मेरे नाना की नजर दूर एक बड़े बरगद के पेड़ के पास जाती है, और वह देखते हैं कि उस बरगद के पेड़ के नीचे एक सफेद साड़ी पहनी हुई औरत रो रही है।शादी के थकान के कारण, मेरे नाना ने इस वाक्य को इतनी गंभीरता से नहीं लिया।

    सगाई का कार्यक्रम समाप्त हो चुका था।और सारे रिश्तेदार थकान के कारण अपने-अपने कमरे में जाकर सो गए।मेरे नाना भी अपने माता-पिता के साथ अपने कमरे में सो गए। काफी गर्मी होने के कारण वह नींद से जाग गए, और अपने कमरे की खिड़की खोली। खिड़की खोलते ही उन्होंने देखा कि सामने एक छोटा सा कुआ है। ठीक उसी समय वही सफेद साड़ी पहनी हुई औरत मेरे नाना को उस कुएं की ओर चलते हुए नजर आए। कुएं के करीब आकर वह औरत ने कुएं में छलांग लगाई। मेरे नाना यह घटना देखकर काफी घबरा गए और चुपचाप अपने बिस्तर पर जाकर सो गए।

    सुबह होते ही सारे रिश्तेदार शादी की रस्मों में व्यस्त हो गए। शादी की तैयारी के कारण किसी के पास इतना समय नहीं था, कि वह मेरे नाना की बातें विस्तार से सुन पाए। इस वजह से मेरे नाना ने पिछली रात की घटना किसी को नहीं बताई और और शादी की तैयारी में लग गए। शादी बहुत धूमधाम से होती है, और सारे रिश्तेदार शादी में शामिल होने के बाद अपने-अपने कमरे में जाकर आराम करते हैं। मेरे नाना को बेचैनी के कारण नींद नहीं आती है।  मेरे नाना के दिमाग  में पिछली रात वाली सफेद साड़ी पहनी हुई औरत बार-बार आ रही थी। 

    मेरे नाना ने बहुत हिम्मत करके वह कमरे की खिड़की वापस खोली,और उनको वही छोटा सा कुआ नजर आया। मेरे नाना ने सोचा कि थोड़ा देर रुक कर देखता हूं , क्या पता कल रात के जैसा आज भी वह औरत फिर से यह कुए के पास आएगी। करीबन 5 10 मिनट रुकने के बाद मेरे नाना ने देखा कि दूर से वही औरत चल कर कुएं के पास आ रही है और करीब आकर उसने कुएं में छलांग लगाई ।मेरे नाना को वह पूरी रात नींद नहीं आई फिर बहुत मुश्किल से वह सो गए।

      सुबह उठते ही मेरे नाना वह कुएं के पास गए और उस में झांक कर देखा। उन्होंने देखा कि वह कुआं पूरा खाली था, उसमें एक बूंद भी पानी नहीं था। मेरे नाना  ने यह सारे हादसे के बारे में अपने गांव के दोस्तों को विस्तार से बताया। पूरी घटना सुनने के बाद नाना के दोस्तों ने कहा कि," यह कुआं उसी औरत का है और अच्छा हुआ कि तू रात में कुएं में झांकने नहीं गया, नहीं तो वह अपने साथ तुझे भी इस कुएं में ढकेल देती"।

      वह अक्सर शहरी लोगों  को अपना निशाना बनाती है। मेरे नाना यह सब सुनकर काफी घबरा गए थे। और उनको चार-पांच दिन तक काफी तेज बुखार हो गई थी ।जबसे उन्होंने होश संभाला था यह उनके साथ होने वाला पहला किस्सा था। जैसे ही मेरे नाना ठीक हुए वह अपने पूरे परिवार के साथ अगली सुबह ट्रेन पकड़ कर अपने घर के लिए रवाना हो गए।

     It was a matter of days when my maternal grandfather would be 17 to 18 years old. My grandfather had gone with his entire family to a small village in Ratnagiri, to attend his aunty's son's wedding. On reaching the village, my grandfather became very happy to meet his childhood friends and his close relatives.  The second evening,it was the engagement ceremony.

     My grandfather and his village friends got ready and went into the engagement. They enjoyed a lot in the engagement.  After dinner, my  grandfather and his friends went for a short walk away from the engagement pavilion.  All the friends were having a lot of fun along the way.  Suddenly my  grandfather's gaze goes to a big banyan tree, and he sees a woman wearing a white sari is crying seating under the banyan tree. Due to the tiredness of the engagement ceremony, my grandfather didn't took this incident seriously.

   The engagement program was over. And all the relatives went to sleep in their respective rooms. My  grandfather also slept in his room with his parents. Due to extreme hot weather , he was awake from his sleep, and opened the window of his room.  Opening the window, he saw that there was a small well. At the same time,my grandfather saw  the same woman wearing a white sari is  walking towards that well.  Approaching the well, the woman jumped into the well.  My grandfather was horrified to see this incident and went to bed quietly and slept.

     As soon as dawn, all the relatives got busy with the wedding ceremony.  No one had so much time due to the wedding preparations, that they could listen to my grandfather's matter in detail.  Because of this my grandfather did not tell the incident of the previous night to anyone and started preparing for marriage.  The wedding takes place with great pomp, and all relatives go to their respective rooms and relax after attending the wedding.  My grandfather does not sleep due to restlessness.  In my grandfather's mind, a woman wearing a white sari from last night was coming again and again.

    My  grandfather dared to open the window of the room, and he saw the same small well.  My grandfather thought that I would wait a while and see, as of last night, even today, that woman will come again to this well.  After waiting for about 5 to 10 minutes, my grandfather saw that the same woman from a distance was coming near the well and coming closer she jumped into the well. My grandfather could not sleep the whole night.

     My grandfather went to the well as soon as he woke up in the morning and looked into it.  He saw that the well was completely empty, there was not a single drop of water in it.  My  grandfather explained this whole incident to his village friends in detail.  After listening to the entire incident, grandfather's friends said, "This well belongs to that woman and it is a relief that you didn't go to peep in the well at night, otherwise she would have pushed you into this well".

     She often targets urbanites.  My  grandfather was very nervous to hear about all this.  And he had a very high fever for four-five days. This was the first story to happen to him since he took step in his adulthood. As soon as my  grandfather recovered, he along with his entire family, left for his house by catching the train the next morning.
